Sausage Sandwich, the Hearty Lunch You Can Make in Minutes
Sausage sandwiches are one of those meals that just work. Quick to make, endlessly customizable and satisfying in a way that few other sandwiches manage to be. Juicy chicken sausages are grilled or pan-fried until golden and slightly charred, then tucked into a soft bun along with sautéed onions, tangy mustard and whatever toppings you like best. It is comfort food that comes together in under 20 minutes, which makes it perfect for busy weeknights, quick lunches or casual weekend gatherings.
This recipe uses Zorabian’s ready-to-cook chicken sausages that are already seasoned and fully cooked, so all you need to do is heat them through and get a nice char on the outside. Serve them in a toasted hot dog bun with caramelized onions, spicy mustard and a handful of fresh vegetables, or keep it simple with just ketchup and mustard. Either way, you get a hearty, satisfying meal that tastes far better than anything you would buy at a stadium or food cart. That is exactly what a good sausage sandwich should be.
Sausage Sandwich Recipe
Serves: 4
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Total time: 20 minutes
Ingredients
For the sandwich
- 8 pieces Chicken Spicy Sausages
- 1 tbsp oil (for cooking)
- 4 hot dog buns or hoagie rolls
- 1 tbsp butter (for toasting buns, optional)
For the toppings
- 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
- 1 bell pepper (red, green or yellow), thinly sliced (optional)
- 1 tbsp oil (for sautéing)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For serving
- Yellow mustard or spicy brown mustard
- Tomato ketchup
- Shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella or your choice)
- Sliced pickles or pickle relish (optional)
- Fresh lettuce or shredded cabbage (optional)
Steps
- Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet or pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and bell pepper (if using). Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions turn golden brown and soft and the peppers are tender. Season with a pinch of salt and black pepper. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Keep warm.
- In the same pan, add 1 tablespoon of oil and heat over medium heat. Add the Zorabian chicken sausages to the pan. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, turning occasionally, until the sausages are heated through and golden brown with slight char marks. The sausages are already fully cooked, so you just need to heat them and get a nice color on the outside. Remove from heat and set aside.
- While the sausages cook, prepare the buns. Slice the hot dog buns or hoagie rolls lengthwise, keeping one edge intact so they open like a book. If you like, spread a little butter on the inside of each bun and toast them in a separate pan over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes until lightly golden and crisp. Alternatively, you can toast them in the oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 3 to 4 minutes.
- To assemble the sandwiches, place one or two sausages (depending on the size of your buns) inside each toasted bun. Top with a generous portion of the sautéed onions and peppers. Drizzle with mustard and ketchup to taste. If using cheese, sprinkle it over the hot sausages so it melts slightly from the heat.
- Add any additional toppings you like, such as pickles, pickle relish, fresh lettuce or shredded cabbage. Serve immediately while the sausages are hot and the buns are crisp.
Tips for Best Results:
- Zorabian’s chicken spicy sausages are already fully cooked, so you only need to heat them through and brown them on the outside. Do not overcook or they will dry out.
- Toasting the buns makes a big difference. The slight crispness adds texture and prevents the bun from getting soggy from the toppings.
- Caramelized onions are a classic topping for sausage sandwiches. Cook them low and slow to bring out their natural sweetness.
- This recipe is endlessly customizable. Try different toppings like sauerkraut, jalapeños, crispy fried onions or your favorite hot sauce.
- If you like extra cheesy sandwiches, place the assembled sandwiches (without the lettuce or fresh toppings) under a broiler for 1 to 2 minutes until the cheese melts and bubbles.
- These sandwiches are best served fresh, but you can prep the onions and peppers in advance and reheat them when needed.
Sausage sandwiches are one of those recipes that proves simple food done right is often the best food. They are quick, satisfying and endlessly adaptable, and once you have made them at home with good sausages and fresh toppings, you will never settle for a mediocre version again. That is exactly what a great sandwich should be.
